Who became the commander of the Confederate army of northern Virginia at the beginning of the Civil War?

Robert E. Lee declined Lincoln's offer to command the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He instead chose to become the commander of the Confederate army of northern Virginia. In the final phases of the war, he was the commander of all Confederate forces.
